Taking Time for Yourself

Taking Time for Yourself too

We often don’t have enough time for ourselves. We have so many commitments with our work, families, and other obligations that it prevents us from just relaxing, or expressing ourselves through art, music, or writing, or whatever replenishes us.

It can affect our ability to problem-solve or think outside the box for creative solutions. Even famous musicians, can have problems finding the time to create. Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen’s wife, mentioned in an interview how difficult it was for her to write the music for her solo album because her family life kept demanding her time.

Taking time for yourself is so important, but we often just don’t do it. Many people think of it as being selfish. By not taking the “me time” we deserve however, we are suffocating the part of our brain that does creative thinking and problem solving.

To arrive at creativity and problem-solving,  we need to get into the “flow.”

Being in the flow is that “peak human experience when someone is so absorbed in a meaningful task that time disappears,” as defined by Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and it’s a profoundly healthy state to be in.

Science has proven that making a point of taking short, intentional breaks during the day can help you tap into your best thinking. It can help you be more creative and productive both at work and at home.

Taking just 20 minutes a day to relax and guide your mind from the mile a minute state into an intuitive, creative state, calms and rejuvenates your nervous system.

Whether you want to create art, music, be a more creative problem solver, or just feel better, taking that valuable time for yourself each day will train your brain to be creative and resilient and help you become the best version of yourself.
